Quick & Simple Strawberries and Cream for Breakfast

I wouldn’t say this is so much of a ‘recipe’ as just a simple breakfast idea. Either way, it’s a great option for the morning!

Building a balanced breakfast:

You always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But what should you be eating?

Just like any meal of the day, you want to focus on building a balanced meal. That means consuming an adequate amount of carbohydrates, protein and fats all in one meal.

This is important throughout the entire day, but especially when you first wake up. Your body has been fasting overnight while you sleep, and it requires nutrients to have enough energy to carry you through the morning and the rest of the day.

Breakfast is a great opportunity to consume a decent amount of protein. Especially if you struggle to reach your protein goal for the day, getting a head start by eating decent protein first thing in the morning is sure to help!

Carbohydrates and fats are also needed for energy, hormone function, and satiety. Don’t skip on either in your breakfast! Pairing your carbs with a fat and protein also helps to balance your blood sugar. You know that crash you get after eating something like a donut, or other sugary foods? That’s from the large spike and then decrease in blood sugar. It can make you feel tired, cranky and just ‘off.’ To combat this, pair your carbs with a healthy fat and adequate source of protein. Your body will have more than sugar to digest, making your blood sugar remain more stable, along with stable energy.

This recipe also includes about 5g of fiber. Fiber is important for digestion/regularity and satiety. Most Americans aren’t eating nearly enough (about 15g per day, rather that the recommended 25g for women or 38g for men). This is a great place to start if you notice you’re eating enough calories but have issues with digestion or are still hungry after your meals. Swapping for foods higher in fiber may help.

Here's what you'll need for the recipe:

  • 1 packet cream of wheat
  • 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced
  • 1 scoop collagen (I used vanilla, but any flavor/unflavored will do)
  • 1 TBSP almond butter (or any nut butter of choice)
  • Dash of cinnamon, to taste

How to make it:

  1. Cook the cream of wheat according to the package instructions.
  2. Mix in your collagen until well combined. I like 1st Phorm, as I find that it mixes perfectly.
  3. Top with sliced strawberries, almond butter and add your cinnamon to taste.

Ideas for Swaps/Substitutions:

Cream of wheat might not be your favorite or preferred choice for a meal. You can absolutely swap with oatmeal instead! I know textures throw some people off, but this would be just as good in oats.

If you don’t have or don’t like collagen, protein powder is another great swap. I’d go with a vanilla or chocolate option for this recipe. I really like the iheartmacros brand, both the vanilla and chocolate are amazing and no artificial sweeteners, so they’re a great natural option! I’d use 1/2 to 1 full scoop in this recipe. If you use a full scoop, you may want to add a little bit of almond milk/water to help with consistency.
